NationInspiraton is an English/Afrikaans blog I started about 5 years ago. Today we are a team of about 4 South African writers.
Did you know that South Africa is one of countries with the highest crime rate? It is not a shock to have our community newspapers report on a family whose husband, mommy or grandparents were
Violently murdered during a robbery a suburb away or in the area. This is, unfortunately, everyday news. Many of us have become desensitized and closed off to this kind of news. Some leave the country.
Some of us still feel safe in this prison we live in.
Our news aims to inspire and uplift.
Not to ignore what is going on in our country, but the bad news is definitely creating a fearful and angry nation.
This is not the main reason I started this blog, but I do believe that we do more good than damage in our country’s current situation.
My name is Riska. Happily married and mom of two, we live in the heart of Pretoria, South Africa. I did short courses in photography and journalism as my parents could not afford to send me to university.
I worked at a photographic company for many years, first as a photographer and then in the production department.
To kill the boredom (School Photography), I started writing. Pretty soon it became a grand passion that escaped my soul on a regular basis.
My blog audience grew. I also write and compose music and won a local lyric competition in 2012. Here is one of my songs: https://youtu.be/DyRhO8nRNhI
I quit my job at the photo company two years ago and am currently a stay-at-home wifey. When I am not child rearing or keeping home; music, photography and writing are my sweet escape.
Like many others out there, I felt like I WAS GOING TO WASTE at my place of work. I knew I had heaps to give and it was not being utilized.
I felt unseen and unheard, but I knew things would turn around at some point. I’m glad it did. I am living my dream.
This was probably my main motivation, but there were other factors and traumas that contributed to the situation.
Today I want to motivate people to not give up and go after their dreams.
Our Blog motto is: a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire.”
Keep doing what you know you were created to do, the sparks will turn into flames and pretty soon you might be able to quit the dead end job.
Although I appreciate and respect the people I worked with, grateful for everything I learnt from them during that season, being only focused on making money just didn’t cut it for me.
I was looking for something with more heart and purpose in its stomach. Also something more creative.
I am a Christian and many of my earlier posts were studies on life principles from the bible.
Later I decided that I wanted to start interviewing people. I was still in and unhappy at my place of work and life in general – one day I noticed
a man on the street selling fudge. I thought to myself. Wow, here I am sitting in my car complaining about my job and my life. Look at this guy. This is his job. In the sun all day.
Also having to deal with nasty comments from passing drivers.
I decided to have my first official interview with him. This was in 2012. In 2015, only two years later, for some good reason this interview went viral in our community and many new readers started following the blog.
What I appreciate about this interview is that it captures the heart of what this blog is about. At that time, it was also an inspiration and motivation to me to keep going.
Over the years I have invited friends and family to share in the experience and write about things that inspire them. Today we are a team of 4 writers.
We also have a local promotion company who noticed us online and started inviting us to movie premieres and media screenings where we are given the chance to engage with local celebrities and writing of movie reviews.
The biggest challenge is probably just managing home and blogging. Some days I want to write about/am inspired by a million things, but my home and children take priority and I just need to let some things go.
NationInspiration is in the process of bringing our articles to print. Although online is the future. Many readers in our communities and in our country are missing out.
We are planning to release a small and simple Inspirational Newspaper to inspire our nation. To make a building difference in this country. A Country is not its economy or its wild beauty, but the people in it.
We want to build into, be inspired and inspire people.
People looking for purpose and motivation, these are the people we would like to reach with our news.
Ironically, I don’t follow specific blog writers, but am inspired by various travel bloggers and leaders in the field of management (be it money or resources).
